What is Muharram Image Web

Many Muslims and Non-Muslims alike are still confused about the 10thof Muharram. I have put together a brief explanation for which I sincerely hope that the article proves to be of worthy to you; therefore, benefits you and gives you insight into the first beautiful sacred month of Islam.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, or the “Islamic new year”. It is considered as a sacred month in Islam, in which we have one such day known as the day of Ashura – the 10thof Muharram. This year, the day of Ashura will fall upon Monday, 9thSeptember 2019.

“The year is of twelve months, out of which four months are sacred: Three are in succession – Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah and Muharram, and (the fourth is) Rajab…” {Bukhari)

Literal Meaning of Muharram

Forbidden. It was also made forbidden to wage war and fight during Muharram. It has been termed such as it is sacred and as a confirmation of its sanctity.

Ashura

Ashura holds a special significance in Islam, due to which the Holy Prophet (pbuh) would fast on this day.

“The best of fasts besides the month of Ramadan is fasting during Allah’s month (i.e. Muharram)”. {Sahih Muslim}

The Holy Prophet (pbuh) said: “For fasting on the day of Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before’. {Sahih Muslim}

Significance of Ashura

– On this day, the Prophet Musa/Moses (as) and the children of Israel were saved from the pharaoh and his army with the help of Allah (swt).

Hence, the Jews would fast on the day of Ashura. The Holy Prophet (saw) was informed about this practice. He then himself fasted on this day and commanded the Muslims to do so too as he said,

“I am closer to Musa than they.” {Bukhari}

However, the Muslims were instructed to fast on the 9thas well to demonstrate a change from the practice of the Jews.

  • After the floods, the ark of the Prophet Nuh/Noah (as) settled on Mount Judi.
  • The day of judgement shall be on the Friday, the 10thof Muharram.

To spend freely on your family

There are great blessings for the one who is extra generous to his family on this day. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) Said:

“He who will be generous on his family on the day of Ashura, Allah (swt) will be generous on him for the entire year”. {Tabrani, Baihaqi}

Muharram Day of Spending

Note: Please remember the poor and needy. One must not forget the countless blessings Allah (swt) has showered upon us. All praise is for him alone.
